Different types of glues require different cleaning techniques. Begin by determining what type of glue is stuck to the canvas. Is it a permanent-sealing craft glue, a spray adhesive, a rubber cement, or a white school glue? Knowing the type of glue will guide your approach.
Before attempting to remove the glue from the entire canvas, test a small area first. This will ensure that the cleaning solution doesn't damage or stain the canvas. Try a combination of soapy water, rubbing alcohol, vinegar, or a gentle all-purpose cleaner. Dilute any of these solutions with water and apply gently to area using a soft cloth or sponge.
Once you have tested cleaning solution on a small area, if there is no evidence of staining, begin the process of removing glue from canvas. Start by applying the cleaning solution to the canvas. Use a soft cloth or sponge and rub gently until the glue has begun to loosen. For tougher adhesives, you may need to use a plastic knife to scrape off the glue.
Once glue has been loosened, rinse the area with lukewarm water and dry with a soft cloth. Inspect the canvas for any remaining glue residue. If needed, you may need to repeat the process until all of the glue has been removed.
