What You'll Need

  • A damp cloth
  • Laundry detergent
  • Vinegar
  • Nail polish remover (non-acetone)
  • Rubbing alcohol

Step 1: Scrape off Excess Glue

Use a butter knife or razor blade to scrape away as much of the glue as possible. Be careful not to cut or tear the fabric of the material.

Step 2: Test Out Your Solution on a Small Area

Before you start cleaning the entire stain, it’s best to test out your solution on a small area of the garment or shoe to make sure it doesn’t hurt the material. This is especially important for delicate items.

Step 3: Apply the Solution of Your Choice

  • Damp Cloth: For fresh glue stains, try pre-treating the area with a damp cloth.
  • Laundry Detergent: Soak the item in a mixture of one teaspoon of laundry detergent and one cup of warm water for about an hour.
  • Vinegar: Rub a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and warm water on the glue and allow it to soak overnight.
  • Nail Polish Remover: Soak garment in non-acetone nail polish remover for 15 minutes, then rinse with cold water.
  • Rubbing Alcohol: Moisten a cloth with rubbing alcohol and rub it gently against the glue stain.

Step 4: Launder the Item

Once the glue has been removed, launder the item according to the instructions on the label to remove any excess residue.
