What You'll Need
- A damp cloth
- Laundry detergent
- Vinegar
- Nail polish remover (non-acetone)
- Rubbing alcohol
Step 1: Scrape off Excess Glue
Use a butter knife or razor blade to scrape away as much of the glue as possible. Be careful not to cut or tear the fabric of the material.
Step 2: Test Out Your Solution on a Small Area
Before you start cleaning the entire stain, it’s best to test out your solution on a small area of the garment or shoe to make sure it doesn’t hurt the material. This is especially important for delicate items.
Step 3: Apply the Solution of Your Choice
- Damp Cloth: For fresh glue stains, try pre-treating the area with a damp cloth.
- Laundry Detergent: Soak the item in a mixture of one teaspoon of laundry detergent and one cup of warm water for about an hour.
- Vinegar: Rub a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and warm water on the glue and allow it to soak overnight.
- Nail Polish Remover: Soak garment in non-acetone nail polish remover for 15 minutes, then rinse with cold water.
- Rubbing Alcohol: Moisten a cloth with rubbing alcohol and rub it gently against the glue stain.
Step 4: Launder the Item
Once the glue has been removed, launder the item according to the instructions on the label to remove any excess residue.
