Shearling is a luxurious fabric that looks great in a variety of garments, from jackets to vests and boots. But because it is exposed to everyday wear and tear, it can very easily develop unwanted foundation stains. Trying to tackle that problem can seem intimidating, but good news is that there are a few easy steps you can take to clean foundation stains from shearling.

Step One: Dab Away Excess Product

When dealing with foundation stains, the first step is to try to dab away any excess product. Use a damp cloth and lightly press into the stain in an attempt to lift away the product. This is also a great way to determine exactly how much product is embedded in the fabric - if the cloth starts to become saturated, that’s a sign that the stain is particularly stubborn and you’ll need to move on to next step.

Step Two: Apply a Specific Stain Remover

Once you’ve determined level of stain, it’s important to choose the right cleaning product. For foundation stains, you’ll want to select a specific stain remover designed to deal with makeup. These products are usually formulated with gentle cleaning agents that won’t damage your fabric, but be sure to check the label to make sure before you use it. Apply a small amount to the stain, gently rubbing it in with a damp cloth and taking care not to spread product too widely.

Step Three: Rinse With Cold Water

After letting the cleaner sit for a few minutes, it’s time to rinse it off. Use cold water and a sponge to carefully wipe away the residue, being careful not to rub the fabric harshly. If the stain persists, you may need to reapply cleaner and rinse again. Once the stain has been removed, you can then move onto the next step.

Step Four: Let the Area Air Dry or Use a Hairdryer

Finally, let the area air dry or use a hairdryer on a low setting to speed up the process. Once everything is dry, you can enjoy look of your shearling fabric, stain-free!
