The key to removing any kind of stain is acting quickly when it first appears. For foundation stains, this means dabbing and blotting the area with a clean cloth or paper towel as soon as you realize it’s there. Don’t rub the area, as rubbing will only spread the makeup further and make it harder to remove.
Once you’ve blotted away as much of the makeup as you can, it’s time to get a more heavy-duty spot remover. You can find a variety of options in any grocery store or department store. Look for something that’s specifically designed for makeup removal, or that is safe to use on delicate fabrics like satin.
Next, apply the spot remover to the stained area using a cotton ball or a soft, lint-free cloth. Be sure to follow all of instructions on the product’s label, including any pre-testing on a hidden portion of the fabric.
After the spot remover has done its job, it’s time to wash the item of clothing. Check the label to make sure that the fabric is machine-washable. Put the item in the washer on the most gentle cycle, using cold water and a mild detergent.
When washing is finished, hang the garment up to dry in an area where it won’t be exposed to direct sunlight. Avoid the temptation to put it in the dryer, as high heat can cause the stain to set in permanently.
