Foundation is among the most common stains found in lingerie, especially on silks and lace. To get rid of foundation stains, start by pre-treating the fabric with a mild detergent mixed with a few drops of liquid bleach. If the fabric is white, use cold water, if it’s colored, choose lukewarm or warm temperatures. Once you’ve pre-treated the stain, let it sit for 10 minutes.
Wash the garment with a mild detergent and cool or warm water. Do not use bleach on colored fabrics. After washing, check for any remaining stains. If you still see foundation stains on item of clothing, use an enzyme-based detergent. Apply some of the detergent directly to stains, and let it sit for 15 minutes. Work the detergent into the fabric and rinse with warm water.
If you’re still seeing traces of foundation stains, mix one part white vinegar with two parts water in a small bowl and soak the stained fabric, then rinse it with cold water. You can also try using a color-safe oxy-bleach product or a powdered oxygen bleach. Pre-treat the area with the product, according to the instructions on the package, and let it soak for 10 minutes. Wash the item in the washer according to the instructions on the package. Rinse with cold water.
If none of these methods is successful, take the item of clothing to a professional dry cleaner. Let dry cleaner know the stain is from foundation and exactly what type of foundation it is.
