Why Foundation Stains Happen

Foundation stains happen because oils in your makeup interact with natural oils on your skin. The combination of these two causes makeup to rub off and create a stain. This is especially true if you wear light-colored or delicate fabrics, as the makeup is more likely to stain them.

Tips to Prevent Foundation Stains

  • Apply a primer or moisturizer to your skin before applying foundation.
  • Use a setting spray or powder to keep your makeup in place.
  • Wear a scarf or wrap around your shoulders to prevent foundation from rubbing onto your dress.
  • Take extra care when getting dressed and putting on jewelry.

Removing Foundation Stains

If you do find yourself with a foundation stain on your formalwear, don't panic! Here are some tips to help you remove it:

  • Blot stain with a damp cloth to absorb as much of stain as possible.
  • Mix equal parts detergent (like dish soap) and water, then dab it onto the stain with a cotton ball.
  • Rinse the area with cold water.
  • If the stain remains, try soaking the area in vinegar or soda water for 30 minutes.
  • Gently rub the stained area with a mild abrasive, like baking soda.
  • Wash the dress following the manufacturer's instructions.

If all else fails, consider taking your dress to a dry cleaner who will almost certainly be able to help you to remove the stain.
