If you have a foundation stain on your coat or jacket that you're trying to get rid of, most important thing to do is act quickly. The longer you wait, the more difficult it will become to get rid of the stain.

Start by pre-treating the stained area with a liquid laundry detergent. Apply the detergent directly onto stained area and use a scrub brush to work it into fabric. Let the pre-treatment sit for about 10 minutes before laundering.

If the pre-treating method doesn't work, you can try soaking the garment in a solution of one part white vinegar and two parts warm water. Let the garment soak for at least 30 minutes and then wash as usual.

For stubborn stains, you can also try using an oxygen-based bleach or chlorine bleach. Read the garment’s care label to make sure it’s okay to use either product on the fabric. If it is, mix the bleach with warm water according to package instructions and submerge the garment in solution for 30 minutes before laundering.

After you’ve washed the garment, take a look at the stained area—the stain should be gone or much lighter. If it’s still there, you can repeat the process or try another pre-treatment option such as dishwashing liquid or rubbing alcohol.

Taking care of foundation stains right away and following these tips should help you keep your coats and jackets looking new!
