Barrettes are a great way to keep hair neat and out of your face, but they can easily get stained from makeup and other beauty products. To get them clean again, start by soaking them in warm soapy water for about 15 minutes. If you’re dealing with stubborn foundation stains, mix equal parts baking soda and dish soap, adding just enough water to make a paste. Then, apply the paste to the barrette and leave on for about 5 minutes before scrubbing it off with a toothbrush.

For fabric-based barrettes, or those with fabric designs, mix one tablespoon of liquid laundry detergent with a bit of warm water and gently rub the stained areas with a soft cloth. Once the stain has been removed, rinse the barrette well and let it air dry or, if the fabric is delicate, dry it with a clean towel.

When it comes to metal barrettes, use a plastic scouring pad or brush to scrub away any stubborn foundation stains. Or, you can mix a tablespoon of baking soda with enough water to make a paste and use a q-tip to apply it to the barrette. Let it sit for about 10 minutes before rinsing. If there’s still residue left, mix a little lemon juice and salt together and use a cotton ball to apply it to barrette.

Besides cleaning foundation stains, barrettes can also be made to look like new with proper storage. Keep them in a box or ziploc bag and hang them up on hooks when not in use. This will prevent them from gathering dust and dirt that can make them dirty over time.
