What You’ll Need

  • Chlorine bleach (optional)
  • Cold water
  • Mild laundry detergent
  • Stain remover
  • White cloth

Step 1: Blot the Stain Immediately

Before doing anything else, the first step to removing fecal stains from tussah fabrics is to immediately blot the area with a white cloth. This will help absorb as much of the stain as possible, before it sets and becomes more difficult to remove.

Step 2: Pre-Treat the Stain with Detergent

Next, mix a mild detergent, such as dish soap, with cold water. Using a clean, white cloth, rub the mixture into the stain in a circular motion. Let it sit for a few minutes to help break down the stain, before rinsing the area with cold water.

Step 3: Use Stain Remover

If the stain is still visible, use a commercial stain remover, such as an enzyme-based cleaner. Dab a small amount directly onto the stain and gently rub it in. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing it with cold water. If stain persists, try using chlorine bleach.

Final Step: Wash Normally

Once the stain has been completely removed, launder the fabric normally according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Be sure to set the temperature to cold and air dry the fabric to maintain the integrity of the tussah.
