Step One: Blot the Stain Immediately

As soon as you notice the mess, take some paper towels to blot the liquid and solid stains away. Make sure to press firmly, but be gentle so that you don’t spread the stain further.

Step Two: Pre-Treat the Stain

The next step is to pre-treat the stain before washing. You can make your own pre-treatment by mixing one tablespoon of dish soap with two cups of water. Dip a cloth into the mixture and carefully rub the solution into the staining material. Let the solution soak into the fabric for 10 minutes before continuing to the next step.

Step Three: Machine Wash the Dress

Put the dress in the washing machine with your usual detergent. Run the cycle on the highest temperature according to the label instructions. Allow the dress to air dry after washing.

Step Four: Repeat if Necessary

If the stain has not been completely removed, repeat steps two and three. For stubborn stains, add some chlorine bleach to the pre-treatment solution. Be sure to check the fabric label before adding bleach and proceed only if the fabric is suitable for bleaching.

Tips for Success

  • Always address stains immediately; longer you wait, the harder it will be to get rid of the stain.
  • Always follow the fabric care label when washing; using wrong wash cycle or temperature can set stain.
  • If you are able to, try to take the dress to a professional cleaner for the best results.

Do I need to pre-treat the stain?

Yes, pre-treating stain before washing is very important. It helps to break down the stain and makes it easier to remove.

What if the stain won't come out?

If the stain still won't come out, you may need to repeat steps two and three again. You could also try soaking the dress overnight in a solution of warm water and detergent.
