Step 1: Scrape Off Any Solid Waste

The first step is to take a dry cloth and gently scrape off any solid waste that’s still present on the surface of your clothing. Do this as soon as possible to stop the stain from spreading and setting in.

Step 2: Pre-treat the Stain with a Soap or Detergent

Take a bar of laundry detergent and add a few drops of warm water, mixing them together until it forms a thick paste. Apply this to the area where the feces was, massaging it into the fabric with your fingers.

Step 3: Soak the Fabric in Clean Water

Fill a sink or basin with cold water and add a 1/4 cup of white vinegar. Submerge the stained fabric in this solution and let it soak for at least an hour.

Step 4: Machine Wash the Fabric

After the fabric has soaked, put it in washer and select a normal cycle with cold water. While washing, add a few drops of color-safe bleach.

Step 5: Air Dry or Tumble Dry the Fabric

Once the cycle is finished, hang the fabric outside to dry in sun so that sunlight can help to kill any remaining bacteria. Alternatively, you can also tumble dry the fabric on the lowest setting.

Step 6: Check for Stains

Once the fabric is dry, check for any remaining stains. If there are any that didn’t come out during the wash, repeat steps 2-5.

Step 7: Wash Your Hands Thoroughly

It’s important to protect yourself against any potential contamination when dealing with fecal matter. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water after handling any affected fabric.
