Feces stains can vary in appearance depending on what type of feces it is and how old it is. Dog feces is usually light brown in color, while the droppings from wild animals can range from black to green. Feces that is fresh may look wet and shiny, while older droppings may appear dull and dry.
Fresh feces is relatively easy to clean. The best approach is to first scoop up as much of the waste as possible. A small shovel or spade can be used for this task. Once bulk of waste is removed, the next step is to disinfect the area with a solution of bleach and water. Mix one part bleach with 10 parts water in a bucket and use a scrub brush or mop to apply the solution to the stained area. Let bleach sit for 15 minutes before rinsing the area.
Dried feces is more difficult to clean as the stain has had time to set. The best approach is to start by pre-treating the area with an enzyme-based cleaner. This type of cleaner will help loosen the dried matter. Once the pre-treater has had time to work (at least 15 minutes), use a scrub brush to agitate the area. If the stain is still persistent, it may be necessary to use a pressure washer to completely remove the feces.
The best way to keep your lawn free of feces stains is to be diligent about removing any waste your pet leaves behind. Make sure to scoop up any waste immediately and dispose of it in a sealed bag. Additionally, it's important to be aware of any wild animals that may be visiting your yard. Consider adding a fence around your property or putting up deterrents such as flashing lights to keep them away.
