The most important thing to know before starting the process of cleaning up feces from a hanbok is the material. Make sure the fabric is safe to launder, and that dyes used won’t fade or bleed when exposed to water. If you’re uncertain, take your hanbok to a professional dry cleaner.
Once you’ve determined that you can safely clean the hanbok at home, start by scraping away any solid matter and dispose of it properly. Then, use a paper towel or cotton cloth to dab up the liquid. Be gentle and avoid rubbing, which will just spread the stain further.
There are several products that can be used to remove stain. For a water-safe fabric, try a laundry detergent or dishwashing liquid. Dilute a small amount in water and use a toothbrush or cloth to gently scrub the affected area. Let the solution soak for 10-15 minutes before gently rinsing it away.
If the stain isn’t coming out with soap and water, you may need to resort to bleaching. Use a diluted chlorine bleach or color-safe alternative and scrub area with a soft brush. Again, let solution sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse it away with plenty of cold running water.
Once the area is free of any residue, make sure to air dry the fabric thoroughly. To speed up the process, lay the hanbok flat on a dry towel and carefully blot away any remaining moisture.
