What You'll Need

  • Washing machine
  • Stain remover
  • Dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Towels

Step-by-Step Guide for Removing Feces Stains

  1. Treat stain as soon as possible. The longer the stain sits on your fabric, the more difficult it will be to remove.
  2. If possible, turn the item inside out and rinse both sides with cold water or club soda to flush away some of the feces.
  3. Gently scrub any remaining residue with a cloth soaked in warm water and a mild dish soap. Rinse area with cold water, then gently dry with a towel.
  4. Spray an enzyme-based stain remover directly onto the affected area. Follow instructions indicated on the bottle.
  5. If the stain remover doesn’t work, mix together equal parts white vinegar, baking soda, and dish soap until it forms a paste. Apply the paste to stain, let it sit for 15 minutes, then use a scraper to scrape off the paste. Rinse with cold water, then blot dry.
  6. Launder the item in the washing machine in cold water. Do not add detergent or fabric softener yet.
  7. After several washes, if the stain still remains, apply a small amount of detergent directly onto the stain and let it sit for 10 minutes before laundering again.
  8. Once the stain has been removed, launder the item in hot water with detergent and fabric softener. Dry as you normally would.

Tips and Tricks

  • Using a product designed specifically for feces removal is best.
  • Be sure to rinse the area thoroughly after applying a chemical cleaner or homemade paste.
  • Specialty detergents designed for pet messes can be used as well.
