Removing Fresh Stains

For fresh stains, begin by blotting the spot with a damp cloth or paper towel. Then, while wearing gloves, scrape excess away. Be sure to only use a soft, plastic utensil so you don’t damage the fabrics. Next, mix a solution of one part chlorine bleach and four parts cold water. Soak a clean towel in the mixture and place it over affected area for at least 15 minutes. Rinse off the bleach and repeat the process until stain is gone.

Treating Older Stains

Older stains are more difficult to remove. Start by wetting the area with cold water and rubbing in a small amount of dish soap. Let the soap to sit for 15 minutes then rinse out the suds. If the spot is still visible, mix a solution of warm water and laundry detergent. Apply the mixture onto the fabric and let it soak for one hour. Blot the area with a damp towel. Then, apply oxygenated bleach and let it sit for 30 minutes. Finally, rinse thoroughly and repeat as necessary until the stain is gone.

Additional Tips

  • When removing the stain, take care not to rub fabric too hard or use hot water.
  • If the stained fabric is delicate, such as silk, consult a professional dry cleaner before attempting to remove the stain yourself.
  • Avoid using colored towels to prevent color transfer onto the fabric.
