The first step towards cleaning your lace is taking it outside and giving it a good shake. This will help knock any dust or dirt off fabric, making it easier to work with. Be sure to hold onto the lace securely while you’re shaking it so that its delicate fibres don’t tear.
Apply a small amount of detergent to the stained portion of the lace and let it sit for a few minutes. Detergent can help loosen and break down feces particles, making them easier to remove. Be sure to use a gentle, non-abrasive detergent so as not to damage the delicate fabric.
Once the detergent has had time to work, use a clean cloth or sponge to blot the area. Start at the edges of the stain and gently work your way inward. This will help lift particles away from the lace without damaging delicate threads.
Rinse the fabric with cold water to help remove any soap residue and ensure that all the feces particles have been fully removed. Gently swish the fabric back and forth in the water until you’re sure all the particles have been dislodged. You may need to do this several times before the fabric is completely clean.
Once you’re sure that all the particles have been removed, hang the lace up to air dry. Make sure the fabric is completely dry before storing or using it to avoid mildew and other bacteria growth.
Carrickmacross lace should be stored in an airtight container or bag in order to keep dust and dirt away. This will also help ensure the fabric stays clean and free from feces stains.
