Powder-Based Eyeshadows

If the eyeshadow is powder-based, it is a bit easier to get rid of. The first step is to brush off as much of it as you can with a soft-bristled clothes brush. Make sure to brush in only one direction-- never back and forth! This will help keep the nap of velvet intact. To go a step further, you can use a vacuum cleaner on a low setting to pick up any remaining eyeshadow.

Cream or Liquid Eyeshadows

Removing cream or liquid eyeshadows from velvet is more challenging. Your first step is to gently blot the stain with a clean microfiber cloth. Instead of scrubbing, this will help absorb as much of the eyeshadow as possible. Once you have removed as much excess product as you can with the cloth, you may need to use a little water.

Fill a cup or bowl with lukewarm water and add just a drop of mild laundry detergent. Dip a white cloth into the water and lightly dab at the eye shadow stain. Do not rub or scrub the area, as this will damage the velvet fabric. Afterward, immediately blot the area with a dry cloth and let it air dry.

Stubborn Stains

If the eye shadow stain does not seem to be improving with these simple methods, try applying a few drops of hydrogen peroxide directly to the stain. Let the hydrogen peroxide sit for several minutes before blotting again. Alternatively, you may choose to take the garment to a professional cleaner for proper care.

How to Prevent Eyeshadow Stains

Despite your best efforts, it's easy to accidentally get eyeshadow on your clothing. An easy way to prevent color transfer is by sealing it once you’ve applied it. Use a makeup setting spray to lock it in place, avoiding creases and melting.

It's also important to be mindful of where you apply your eyeshadow. Avoid doing it while wearing clothes you love, especially if they are delicate. Whenever possible, opt for a no-makeup look or find an alternate surface, such as a vanity table.
