Whether you are looking after an antique chaise or a modern-day sofa, it is easy to forget about the special care required for brocade fabrics. While brocade fabrics are durable and long-lasting, this delicate material is also prone to staining, particularly when it comes to removing eye shadow stains.

Eye shadows can transfer easily onto brocade due to their oily and greasy consistency. If the stain is quite fresh, it is best to use a clean cloth that is slightly dampened with cold water to dab away the excess before attempting to tackle the stain further.

How to Remove Eye Shadow Stains from Brocade

The best method for removing eye shadow stains from brocade fabric is to first create a gentle cleaning solution by combining half a teaspoon of mild dish detergent and one cup of cold water. Soak a clean white cloth in the solution. Use the cloth to gently dab stained area, being careful to keep the solution away from any coloured parts of fabric as this could cause further staining.

After dabbing stain with the soapy water, rinse off remaining soap residue with a clean, damp white cloth and then blot the area with an absorbent white cloth until completely dry; be mindful to not rub the fabric as this will only spread stain.

For stains that persist, adding ammonia to the soapy water solution can help. Again, use an appropriate-sized white cloth soaked in the solution to dab the stain. For extra stubborn stains, a small amount of isopropyl alcohol can be used. However, as the alcohol can strip natural colour from fabrics, it is important to test this in an inconspicuous area first to ensure it does not discolour the material.

Preventing Future Stains

To prevent eye shadow stains from reoccurring, make sure to remove any residues on your fingers prior to using the fabric. Keeping the fabric dry and dust-free is also important. If possible, keep the furniture away from sources of direct sunlight, which can cause fabric discoloration. If an eye shadow stain does occur, always act quickly and follow the steps above to remove it properly.
