If you’re a parent or work with children, chances are great that you’ve had to deal with the occasional diaper blowout. These messes can be difficult to clean and often leave residue on clothing and shoes. Sandals, being open-toed, are especially prone to such stains.

But have no fear! While diaper stains may seem daunting, there are a few simple steps and materials you can use to remove them from your sandals:

  • Step 1: Heavily dampen the affected area. Using a damp cloth, thoroughly wet the stained spot(s). This will help loosen the residue so that it is easier to remove.
  • Step 2: Apply a mild detergent. For sandals, it’s best to use a mild laundry detergent such as Woolite. Squeeze a generous amount onto the stain(s) and allow it to soak in for 10 minutes.
  • Step 3: Scrub lightly with a soft brush. After 10 minutes, use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub away the stain. Be sure to move the brush in a circular motion to ensure that the detergent is properly agitated and that the stain is removed.
  • Step 4: Rinse the area with cool water. After scrubbing, rinse the area with cool water to ensure that all of the detergent is removed. It’s important to use cool water; hot water may cause stain to set.
  • Step 5: Allow area to dry naturally. After rinsing, pat down the area with a clean cloth and allow it to air dry. This will help prevent watermarks from forming.

Now that you know how to remove diaper stains from sandals, you can restore your damaged shoes. With a few simple steps, your sandals can look good as new!
