Step 1: Remove Excess Solids and Scrape Off Excess Stain

Using a spoon or the back of a butter knife, carefully scrape off any excess solid material—for example, food residue that could be causing the stain. Then, gently use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe off any excess liquid from surface of the stain. Be careful not to spread the stain further.

Step 2: Pre-Treat the Area

Lift any remaining debris, then saturate the area with a pre-treatment product that’s specifically made for clothing (check the label of the product before buying). Allow the product to sit on stain for at least 10 minutes before moving onto the next step.

Step 3: Launder Jeans

To finish up, machine-wash the jeans using the hottest water the fabric can handle. Follow the product's instructions in terms of which laundry detergent to use (liquid or powder) and how much to apply. If a product's directions are not given, use a mild laundry detergent, two tablespoons of baking soda and half a cup of white vinegar, and allow the mixture to sit on the stained area for 30 minutes.

Tips and Warnings

  • It's best to avoid air drying jeans with stains. Doing so can sometimes cause stains to become more difficult to remove.
  • Use caution when treating delicate fabrics such as silk, rayon and wool.
