Changing diapers is one of most important parenting duties, and parents naturally want to make sure their baby is safe and comfortable. Unfortunately, dirty diaper cleanups can lead to unsightly stains on any fabric surface. To keep your home in the best condition, here’s how to clean diaper stains with helpful hints.

Start with a Stain Remover

Using a stain remover is the first line of defense against stubborn diaper stains. To remove the stain, spray the remover directly onto the soiled area, or soak the entire item in a cold or lukewarm bucket of water with a small amount of detergent and the stain remover. It’s also important to pay attention to the clothing care label for temperature/wash settings and follow the suggested instructions as closely as possible.

Rinse and Wash

Once the stain remover is applied, rinse off the area until the water runs clear. For larger stains, you may need to repeat this process before washing. When machine washing the item, use a large capacity setting and cold water. Pre-treat the stained area with a laundry additive. Try using a stain pre-treatment specifically formulated for cloth diapers. And don’t forget to read the directions carefully and use only as indicated.

Don’t Dry Until It’s Clean

When your diapers come out of the washer and dryer, make sure they’re stain-free and enclose any that still have stains in a dryer sheet and put them in the dryer on a low heat cycle. If stains remain after drying, repeat the washing process before trying another cycle.

How to Prevent Staining?

The best way to avoid diaper stains is to prevent them before they happen. A great way to do this is to use a cloth diaper liner. Liners are disposable, biodegradable sheets made of breathable material that sit between the baby’s skin and the diaper. They act as a barrier between the baby’s skin and the diaper, helping to keep the diaper clean and free from stains. Additionally, you can use a diaper sprayer to help rinse clean the diapers and remove any excess waste, helping to reduce and eliminate stains.
