The first step is to pre-treat the stained area. You want to start by dabbing a bit of liquid detergent or dish soap onto the stained area. Then, use a damp cloth or sponge to create a lather. Let the lather sit on the stain for around 10 minutes before blotting it off.
After pre-treating the stained area, it’s time to soak. Fill a sink or bucket with hot water and submerge the entire collared shirt. Allow the shirt to soak for at least an hour. The hot water will soften the fabric, which makes it easier to remove tough stains like diaper residue.
Once the shirt has been soaked for an hour, take it out of the water and apply laundry detergent directly to the stained area. Work the detergent into the stained spot using your hands, then let it sit for another 10 minutes.
Now you’re ready to wash. Place the shirt in the washing machine and set it to a hot cycle. If necessary, add some extra laundry detergent to help remove diaper staining. Make sure to only use detergents specifically designed for colored clothing, as some detergents can cause fading and discoloration.
Once cycle is finished, it’s time to dry your shirt. Hang it outside or lay it flat to air dry. Never put damp clothing into the dryer, as this can cause shrinking and additional damage to fabric.
With the right supplies and a few simple steps, you can easily remove diaper stains from collared shirts. Just remember to use the right detergent and to always let the shirt air dry after washing.
