Having a baby can be one of the most wonderful experiences in life, but it can also mean that your favorite clothing items and accessories may come into contact with baby messes. While you can usually manage to get rid of many food and drink stains with basic washing methods, diapers can leave behind stubborn marks that need special attention.

Steps for Removing Diaper Stains from Fabric

  1. Remove Excess Debris: Begin by gently scraping away any excess debris using the edge of a spoon or butter knife.
  2. Soak in Warm Water: Fill a bucket or sink with lukewarm water and add 1/4 cup of detergent per gallon of water used. Soak the stained area for 15 minutes.
  3. Pre-Treat the Area: Using a pre-wash stain remover, massage area lightly and let sit for another 5 minutes.
  4. Clean Stain: Rub the stained area with a sponge while dipping the fabric in and out of the water and detergent mixture. Rinse the garment or item in cold water and hang to dry.
  5. Check the Stain: If stain remains after the first attempt, repeat the pre-treating and cleaning process until stain has been removed.

Alternative Methods for Removing Diaper Stains

In addition to the steps above, consider some of these alternative methods for removing diaper stains from fabric:

  • Borax: Make a paste from borax powder and water. Rub the paste onto the diaper stain, then let the fabric sit for an hour before rinsing with cold water.
  • Vinegar: Mix one part vinegar with two parts water and soak garment before washing normally.
  • Baking Soda: Create a baking soda paste with warm water and rub into the stain. Let the fabric sit for at least 30 minutes before laundering.

Tips for Prevention

To avoid diaper stains from ruining your clothes, it’s always a good idea to take precautions such as wearing a bib when feeding your baby, and never allowing diaper to touch your garments directly.
