Step 1: Pre-treat the Stain

Pre-treating a stain before doing any washing will help ensure that the stain is removed. Before starting, check the clothing care label for recommended cleaning instructions. Then, you'll want to mix a solution of cold water and laundry detergent. Dab the solution onto the soiled area with a soft white cloth and let it sit for about 5 minutes.

Step 2: Launder the Garment

Once you have pre-treated the stain, place the garment in the washing machine along with your usual detergent. Set the machine to “cold delicate cycle” and add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. The vinegar helps to remove stubborn stains, so this extra step is very important.

Step 3: Air Dry the Garment

After laundering, hang garment up to air dry. Do not place it in dryer or expose it to direct heat, as this can make the stain set in. When the garment has dried completely, inspect it for any remaining stains. If necessary, repeat the pre-treating and laundering steps until stain is completely removed.

Additional Tips for Cleaning Diaper Stains from Calico

  • Always use cold water when pre-treating and laundering diaper stains, as hot water can set the stain into the fabric.
  • Be sure to use a gentle detergent. Harsh detergents may damage the delicate calico fabric.
  • When pre-treating a diaper stain, it is best to avoid rubbing stain as this can cause it to spread.
  • If the stain persists after laundering, try soaking garment in a mixture of warm water and a teaspoon of liquid dish soap.
