Before washing the backpack with any of the items listed above, you must first blot the stain out. Use a soft cloth or paper towel and press gently against stain to soak up as much liquid as possible. Do not rub, as that may spread the stain even more.
Depending on the kind of stain, you may need to pre-treat the area before actually cleaning it. For protein-based stains, like milk or formula, use a laundry detergent with hot water to make a paste and gently rub it into the stain. For oil-based stains, like grape jelly or diaper cream, you can use rubbing alcohol or a combination of hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar.
Once the stain has been pretreated, it's time to actually wash the backpack. Fill up a plastic container or the sink with warm water and add appropriate laundry detergent in the water (check garment labels for the right amount). Soak the backpack for at least 30 minutes, then remove it and scrub gently with a soft cloth, brush, or sponge.
Once done washing, let the backpack dry completely in a sunlit area. This should take about 12 to 24 hours. Do not put in the dryer, as that may damage the backpack.
