Dessert wines, such as port and sherry, are delicious to sip and savor with a late night snack. Unfortunately, their deep red color can be a nightmare to get out of delicate clothing like underwear. Even worse, if you leave it for too long before cleaning it, stain may be impossible to remove.
The first step is to try to remove as much of the liquid as possible. If the stain is still wet, you can use a dry paper towel or rag to blot up any excess. If the spill has already dried, lightly scrape off anything that is caked on.
Once you have cleared away the excess wine, it's time to pre-treat the stain. Start by applying a stain remover directly onto the area and let it sit for 15-30 minutes. This will give the cleaning solution time to break down the stain so it's easier to remove in the next step.
After the pre-treatment, you'll want to soak the item in warm water. This will help draw out any remaining stain and make sure all of the cleaning solution has been rinsed away. After soaking, launder the item as usual, making sure to double check the care instructions to make sure the fabric type and temperature settings are correct. If the stain is still visible after washing and drying, repeat process until it is gone.
