When you have toppled your glass of dessert wine onto your favourite t-shirt, the first thing to do is remain calm – with the right steps and some patience, it’s possible to remove the stain without damaging the fabric.
The first step is to clean up the spill itself. As quickly as possible, dab up any excess liquid with a clean cloth or kitchen paper. Don’t rub or scrub the stain, but instead pat gently and try to absorb as much of the liquid as you can.
Once the majority of the liquid has been blotted out, the next step is to soak the stain in cold water. Fill a bowl or sink with cold water, and submerge the stained area of the t-shirt. Leave it to soak for about 15 minutes, then scrub the stain gently if needed. Avoid rubbing too harshly so as not to damage the fabric.
After soaking and scrubbing stain, it’s time to apply a stain remover. There are many different types of stain removers available in supermarkets or pharmacies, so read the instructions carefully before applying. If using a shop-bought product, follow the instructions precisely for the best results. Alternatively, you can mix one tablespoon of white vinegar with two tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide, then use this homemade mixture as a natural stain remover.
Once you’ve applied the stain remover, it’s time to wash shirt. Wash it by itself in the washing machine on a cold cycle, or wash it by hand using cold water. After washing, check the shirt for any remaining stains and repeat the previous steps if needed. Finally, air dry the shirt away from direct sunlight.
