Dessert wines are particularly prone to staining fabrics, especially delicate materials like silk charmeuse. But don't worry - stains don't have to be a permanent blemish. You can restore your silk fabric to its former glory by following these steps.
The key is to act quickly. As soon as you notice a stain, gently, but firmly blot excess liquid with a washcloth or paper towel. Move the fabric around to provide the cloth maximum absorbency. Then, run cold water through the back of the stain, creating a pressure from behind to help further release the liquid.
Once you've blotted the stain, it's time to use a stain remover. Fill up a sink or basin with cold water, and add a few drops of laundry detergent or a special fabric stain remover. Let the fabric sit in solution for half an hour, then rinse thoroughly with cold water.
Before drying your fabric, check to make sure the stain has been completely removed. If it has not disappeared completely, repeat the process until it has. When you're satisfied that the stain is gone, rinse the item again, then hand-wash it with a mild soap. Hang the fabric to dry and voila! It should look good as new.
