Gather Your Supplies

  • White Vinegar
  • Salt
  • Cream of tartar
  • Borax
  • Dish soap
  • Washing machine

Blot the Stain Immediately

As soon as a dessert wine spill occurs, immediately use a paper towel or cloth and blot the stain to prevent it from spreading. Don't scrub the stain, just gently blot it to soak up what you can and hold the fabric so the liquid doesn't seep in further.

Create a Paste

Mix equal parts of salt, cream of tartar, borax and white vinegar in a bowl to make a paste. Then, take a clean cloth and spread the paste over stain. Allow the paste to sit for 10 minutes to give it time to penetrate the stain and work its magic.

Scrub and Rinse

Using a clean cloth, gently scrub the stained area with the paste. Don't be too harsh or it could damage the fabric. Once all the paste has been removed, rinse area with cold water. Use a soft brush if needed to get the remaining paste out.

Launder the Scarf

Next, add a small amount of dish soap to the washing machine, as well as the stained scarf. Put the cycle on a delicate setting and use cold water to prevent stain from setting further into the fabric. Once the cycle is complete, hang the scarf to dry or lay it flat on a towel. Do not put it in a dryer, as this could set the stain.
