The key to getting rid of any kind of stain is blotting. Start by using a clean, dry cloth in order to absorb as much of the spilled liquid as possible. If more moisture remains, use a paper towel and continue to blot until no more liquid is removed.
You'll want to test for colorfastness before proceeding. To do this, take a Q-tip or cotton ball and apply a small amount of cleaning product to an area of the poncho that is out of sight. If the color changes or fabric begins to disintegrate, the poncho should not be cleaned in this manner.
In a small bowl, mix together one part dishwashing detergent with two parts water. Be sure to mix it up thoroughly. For stubborn stains, you may need to use a stronger solution of one tablespoon of vinegar and two cups of water.
Dampen a clean cloth with cleaning solution and apply it directly to stain. Allow the area to soak for 10-15 minutes before continuing.
Using your fingers, gently rub the stained area in a circular motion. Work the solution into the fabric and you should begin to see results.
Once the stain has been worked out, rinse the area with cold water. Continue to rinse until the cleaner has been completely removed.
Finally, allow the area to air dry. Don't place poncho in the dryer as it may shrink or become distorted.
Congrats! You've successfully gotten that pesky dessert wine stain out of your poncho. Now go show off your freshly cleaned garment to your friends!
