As soon as the mishap occurs, take a clean sponge or cloth and blot stain - this should help to absorb the majority of the wine before it sets in. Once you’ve removed as much of the wine as possible, rinse the garment in cold water and blot again. Repeat the process until the fabric is free of the stain.
For older stains, you may need to use a bit of muscle power! Create a paste by mixing one tablespoon of dish soap, one tablespoon of white vinegar and two tablespoons of baking soda. Spread the mixture onto the affected area, then leave it to set for 15 minutes. Make sure the paste doesn’t dry out - keep an eye on it and re-dampen if necessary. After the time is up, rinse the garment in cold water and blot it dry. Continue reading to see if stain remains.
If the stain still refuses to budge after above methods, mix three parts hydrogen peroxide with one part dish soap. Using a spoon, scoop up the mixture and apply to just stain. Leave the mixture in place for around 10 minutes, then rinse it off and blot the fabric dry. You can also repeat the steps above if needed.
With these simple steps, you can easily remove dessert wine stains from your J. Crew clothing items. Keep in mind that these techniques should only be used on dry fabrics - avoid washing stained items in a washing machine, as this could set the stain permanently. It’s also best to air dry garments after the removal process is complete.
