The key to successfully removing a dessert wine stain from down jacket is acting fast. The longer the stain is allowed to sit, the harder it will be to get out. So do your best to quickly wipe off any excess liquid and dab away as much of the wine as you can with a paper towel. Don’t rub the fabric or you risk spreading stain.
Once excess liquid is removed, you should pretreat the stain with a gentle detergent. Avoid using anything too harsh, as it may damage material. Make sure to test any cleaning agent out in an inconspicuous spot on the jacket first before applying it directly to the stain. Then gently work the cleaner into the fibers and let it sit for a few minutes to penetrate the stained area.
Once detergent has soaked in, it's time to throw the down jacket in the wash. Again, stick to a gentle detergent and use cold water to avoid shrinking the fabric. Add an extra rinse cycle to ensure no detergent residue remains on the jacket after washing. For darker garments, you can add a cup of white vinegar to load to help whiten the fabric without fading the color.
Once jacket is clean, hang it up to dry. Do not put it in the dryer, as this could shrink fabric or cause permanent damage to the jacket. Instead, lay it flat to dry and make sure to fluff the down inside the jacket every couple of hours so air can circulate and help the down dry faster.
