Dessert wines such as port, sherry, ice wine, and dessert reds are notoriously stain-prone. The sweet content and dark colors of these wines often leave lasting marks that are difficult to remove without the right approach.

It can be especially challenging to clean dessert wine stains from delicate fabrics like double georgette. This lightweight, sheer material is prone to water damage, so it's best to take a gentle approach when removing the stain.

What You'll Need for the Job

  • White paper towels, plain napkins, or a white cloth
  • A small container
  • Lemon juice (fresh or bottled)
  • Cold water
  • Mild detergent
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Absorbent powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Apply pressure to the stain with a white paper towel, napkin, or cloth to absorb as much of the liquid as possible.
  2. Mix one tablespoon of lemon juice and one cup of cold water in a small container.
  3. Dip a clean cloth into the solution and gently blot the stain.
  4. Rinse the area with cold water and repeat until the stain disappears.
  5. If the stain persists, mix two tablespoons of mild detergent with two cups of cold water and blot the area with a cloth.
  6. For tougher stains, dissolve three tablespoons of baking soda in two cups of warm water. Dip a clean cloth in the solution and apply pressure to stain.
  7. Rinse the area with cold water. If the stain is still visible, apply a few drops of hydrogen peroxide and let it sit for several minutes before rinsing again.
  8. If the stain persists, mix equal parts white vinegar and cold water in a container and use a cloth to apply it to the stain. Let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing with cold water.
  9. You can also try applying an absorbent powder like talcum powder to the stain. Let it sit for 20 minutes before brushing it away.

Warning

Be sure to use lukewarm water instead of hot water when cleaning double georgette fabric, as this could cause fabric to shrink or become discolored.

Conclusion

Accidentally spilling dessert wine on your gorgeous double georgette fabric doesn't have to be a nightmare. With the right cleaning approach, you can get rid of those unsightly stains in no time.
