Dessert wine is one of the trickiest substances to clean up. Despite its sugary goodness, its deep red color can become permanently embedded into your clothing if you don’t treat it properly. If you’ve found yourself dealing with a dessert wine stain on cotton denim, here are a few steps that you should take:
Before applying any type of cleaner to the stain, use a white towel to blot up as much of the excess liquid as possible. This ensures that you won’t be diluting the wine or spreading it around further.
The next step is to pretreat the stain with a commercial stain remover product. Spray the cleaner directly onto stain and allow it to set for several minutes before attempting to wash. This gives product time to work its magic and loosen the stain.
After pretreating the stain, it’s time to launder the item. Use hot water and a laundry detergent that is designed to fight stains. If the stain is particularly stubborn, you may want to add a capful of bleach to the wash cycle. Once the cycle is complete, check the stained area to make sure the stain has been removed.
If some of the stain remains after washing, try soaking the item in a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water. Allow the item to soak overnight, then rinse it off and wash it again using hot water and detergent. This should remove any remaining traces of the stain.
