The first step is to act fast. Dessert wine can be tough to remove from any fabric. The best way to get it out is by treating the spot as quickly as possible.
Start by pre-treating the stain with a product like Woolite or Carbona Stain Devils. These products are designed to break down the proteins and oils found in food and beverages, so they work well on dessert wine stains. If you don't have one of these products handy, you can try white vinegar or dish soap.
Once the pre-treatment is applied, let it sit for at least five minutes before proceeding. This will give the product a chance to soak into the fibers and start breaking down the stain.
After pre-treatment has had a chance to work, it's time to get to work. Fill a bucket with warm water and add a mild detergent, such as Woolite or Dreft. Then take your cashmere and submerge it completely in the mixture. Allow the fabric to soak for 15 minutes.
Next, use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub affected area. Do not use a brush that could snag or damage the delicate fabric. If the stain is still visible, let the cashmere soak for an additional 15 minutes before repeating process.
When you’re finished scrubbing, take the cashmere out of the water and rinse with cool water until all traces of pre-treatment and detergent are gone. Finally, place the item between two towels and press firmly to remove excess moisture.
After the garment is dry, inspect it for any remaining signs of the stain. If necessary, repeat process until the stain is gone.
With a little bit of effort, you can bring your cashmere back to life after a dessert wine spill. By following the steps above, you can make sure your cashmere looks as good as new.
