The first thing to do when a dessert wine stain occurs is act quickly. The longer a stain sets, the more difficult it will be to remove. Take the dress off and turn it inside out; then use a paper towel to blot the backside of the stain, applying light pressure. Doing this can help transfer some of the wine from the fabric to the paper.
Next, rinse the affected area with cold water as soon as possible. Heat will set the stain, so use only cold water. If the stain persists, create a mix of one tablespoon of liquid dish soap, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water. Dip a clean cloth into the solution and press it against the stain for a few minutes. Then, rinse with cold water and launder garment as normal.
It’s important to follow the instructions on clothing label. Some fabrics may react to detergents, bleach, or hot water. In addition, don't dry the garment in a dryer until you are sure the stain has been completely removed. Heat will make the stain permanent.
If stain doesn’t come out with these methods, take it to a professional dry cleaner. It might cost more but it’s worth ensuring that the stain won’t ruin your favorite dress!
