What is Shantung Fabric?

Shantung fabric is a type of silk fabric that is produced in a particular way. The fabric has slubbed yarns that are woven together with threads of various thickness, giving a unique bumpy texture. Typically, shantung is used for upholstery fabrics, curtains, and other home furniture pieces.

How to Tackle Crayon Stains on Shantung

  1. Start by pre-treating the stain. Use a brush or an old toothbrush to gently agitate and apply some laundry detergent onto the stained area.
  2. Soak the fabric in a solution of 1 part white vinegar and 2 parts water. Leave fabric to soak for 30 minutes.
  3. Rinse the fabric in cold running water.
  4. Wash fabric in the washing machine on mild cycle with cold water. Add half a tablespoon of laundry detergent and a teaspoon of fabric stain remover.
  5. After cycle has finished, check if stain has gone. If it is still visible, repeat steps 2 - 4.
  6. Allow the fabric to air dry and check for any remaining stain.

Additional Tips

  • Ensure that you only use products that are suitable for silk fabrics.
  • Always read and adhere to any care instructions on the fabric label.
  • Avoid using hot water as this could cause stains to set into the fabric.
  • If possible, take the fabric to a professional dry cleaner.
