When it comes to cleaning up crayon stains from a pullover, there is no need to panic. It doesn’t matter which type of crayon was used— wax, oil-based, or watercolour—these steps provide a simple guide to removing numerous types of crayon stains from any pullover sweater.

Step 1: Gather Supplies and Test the Pullover Sweater

Start by gathering necessary supplies. You will need a dry cloth, freezing ice cubes, an old toothbrush, a soft-bristled brush, and a cleaning solution such as rubbing alcohol, baking soda, or dishwashing detergent. Once the supplies are gathered, it is important to test the pullover for colorfastness, especially if it is made from a delicate fabric like cashmere. To do this, take a small section of the fabric and rub the cleaning solution on it. If fabric colors bleed or the texture changes, it is not safe to use the cleaning solution. If fabric passes the test, then you can move on to the next step.

Step 2: Prepare the Pullover for Cleaning

Start by assessing fabric and crayon stain. If the pullover has any heavy or set-in stains, use a dry cloth to blot the area lightly. Blotting the stain will help to loosen it from the fabric. After blotting, put a few ice cubes in a sealed plastic bag and place it on top of the stain. This will help to freeze the crayon and lift the stain from the fabric. Let the ice sit for about 15 minutes before moving on to next step.

Step 3: Clean the Stain

Once ice has done its job, gently rub the stain with an old toothbrush and the chosen cleaning solution. Use a soft-bristled brush if there is any remaining residue. Make sure to move brush in only one direction as scrubbing back and forth can damage the fabric. When the stain is gone, rinse the pullover with cold water and allow it to air dry. If the stain still persists, repeat the process until the stain is lifted.
