What to Do Right Away

When a crayon stain happens, it’s important to act quickly! Here are the steps to take when you first encounter a crayon stain:

  • Remove any excess crayon from the oxfords with a spoon or butter knife.
  • Place absorbent paper towels underneath the area of the stain
  • Apply a pre-wash stain remover such as Zout or Spray ‘n Wash to the fabric. Let it sit for five minutes before washing.

Cleaning with Detergent and Water

Once you have pre-treated stain, the next step is to wash the oxfords in hot water. If your oxfords are machine-washable, put them in the machine with a detergent that is safe for both the color of the oxfords and their fabric. For oxfords that cannot go in the washing machine, try this method:

  • Mix equal parts detergent and hot water.
  • Dampen a clean cloth and rub the solution onto the stained area.
  • Rub gently to remove the stain and then rinse with cold water.
  • Repeat if necessary and then allow to air dry.

Getting Rid of Stubborn Stains

If the stain has been there for a while and doesn’t come out with the above methods, then it’s time to use some more abrasive cleaning materials. Here are two options to try:

  • Baking soda and white vinegar – make a paste out of equal parts baking soda and white vinegar. Apply paste to the stain and then scrub gently. Rinse and repeat until the stain is gone.
  • Lemon juice and salt – mix lemon juice and salt into a paste and apply to the stain. Allow it to sit for 30 minutes and then scrub gently. Rinse and repeat.

Preventing Future Stains

Once you’ve got your oxfords back in tip-top shape, the best way to keep them that way is to prevent any future stains. You can do this by spraying a protector such as Scotchgard onto the fabric before wearing them. This will help repel spills and stains so your oxfords stay looking their best for longer.
