If you wear a one-piece swimsuit, chances are that you’ve experienced the panic that comes with finding crayon stains on them. Crayons, along with other art mediums, often find their way onto clothes, and one-piece swimsuits are not excluded. Fortunately, it’s easy to remove crayon stains if you act promptly.
Different types of fabrics require different pre-treatment methods. Start by quickly rinsing the stained area in cold water. For natural fibers like cotton, you can apply a mixture of liquid dish soap and cold water directly to the affected area. Leave it for a few minutes, and then rinse it with cold water. For synthetic fibers, such as Polyester or Nylon, spray the stain with shaving cream or hairspray. Leave product on for about five minutes, and then rinse it out.
If the stain persists after pre-treatment, try using a gentle laundry detergent. Before using the detergent, however, test it on a hidden area of the swimsuit first. This is to ensure that the detergent won’t cause any discoloration.
If the stain remains, you can try submerging your one-piece in hot water and vinegar. The vinegar helps loosen crayon stain so that it can be removed more easily. Fill a large bowl or bucket with a gallon of hot water and one cup of white vinegar. Place the one-piece in the solution and let it soak for about an hour. Then, scrub the stained area with a soft toothbrush before rinsing it off completely.
Once you’ve pre-treated and soaked the swimsuit in hot water and vinegar, you can finish the cleaning process in the washing machine. Place the swimsuit in a mesh bag, to prevent snags and tears, and turn temperature to warm. Add a mild detergent and wash the swimsuit on a regular cycle. When the cycle is done, remember to hang the swimsuit up to dry, rather than putting it in dryer.
If the stain is still not budging, try a special stain remover specifically designed for tough stains. These products contain active ingredients that help break down deep-seated stains. Follow the instructions on the product for best results. You might also want to consider seeking professional help from a dry cleaner.
