Things You'll Need

  • Soft cloth
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Dish soap
  • Sponge
  • Shoe brush

Step 1: Blot the Stain

The first step is to take a soft cloth and gently blot the stain. Don’t rub it; this will just spread the crayon around. If possible, try to scrape any excess wax away with a knife or spoon. This will help to reduce the size of the mark.

Step 2: Apply Rubbing Alcohol

Take a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol and dab it onto the stain. The rubbing alcohol will help to break down crayon wax. You can also use a cotton swab if that’s easier. Leave the rubbing alcohol on the stain for 10-15 minutes before proceeding to the next step.

Step 3: Use Dish Soap and Water

Take a sponge or washcloth and wet it with warm water. Add a few drops of dish soap to the cloth or sponge, and then gently scrub the area. Rinse the cloth or sponge often; this will help make sure you’re not just spreading the crayon around. Keep scrubbing until all of the wax has been lifted from the shoe.

Step 4: Wipe Dry & Brush

Once the stain has been removed, take a dry cloth and gently wipe away any remaining moisture. Then, use a shoe brush to buff the shoe and restore its luster. Your mules should look as good as new!
