Whether it was a curious toddler using your bbq as a canvas or an adult with questionable judgment, crayon stains on your grill can be a real eyesore. Unsightly crayon marks not only detract from your outdoor grilling experience, but they can also be potentially dangerous. When food cooks on top of wax, it can contaminate the taste of meal and be hazardous to your health.

Step 1: Heat the Grill

The first step in removing crayon stains from your grill is heating it up. This helps soften the waxy residue from the crayon and makes it easier to scrape off the surface. Preheat grill to medium-high heat for 10–15 minutes and then turn off the heat. Make sure to keep the lid closed the entire time while the grill is preheating.

Step 2: Scrape Off Wax Residue

Using a metal spatula, carefully scrape off the hardened wax residue from the grill’s surface. Make sure to use a gentle and steady motion when scraping so as not to damage the surface of the grill. If the wax residue is particularly hard to remove, you may need to reheat the grill again before scraping.

Step 3: Clean the Grill

Once all wax residue has been removed from the grill, it’s time to give it a good cleaning. Start by filling a bucket with hot, soapy water and using a damp cloth to wipe down the surface of the grill. Finish up by rinsing it off with a hose and letting it dry completely.
