Before you begin any of more advanced techniques for crayon stain removal, start by blotting the area with a dry cloth or sponge. This will help remove some of the excess wax and make the stain easier to treat.
Mix a few drops of detergent with warm water and use this to pre-treat the stained area. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before blotting away with a damp cloth.
You can also try spraying the stain directly with a little WD-40. This will break down the wax and make stain easier to remove. Wait a few minutes, then blot with a clean cloth.
If you still have some residual wax on fabric, try applying some rubbing alcohol. Saturate a cloth and press into the stain. This should help to dissolve the waxy residue.
If the stain remains, try using a solution of equal parts ammonia or vinegar and warm water. Apply to a cloth and gently rub into the affected area. Let sit for a few minutes, then rinse with cold water and blot dry.
If the above methods don’t work, try sprinkling a generous amount of salt onto the stain. Then, using a clean cloth, rub the salt into the fabric. The abrasive action of the salt may help to remove stubborn wax.
If the stain still remains, try rubbing a little baby oil into the fabric. Leave for a few minutes and then blot away with a clean cloth. This should help to loosen and break down the wax.
Sometimes a combination of dish soap and warm water is all you need to get rid of pesky crayon stains. Rub a few drops of the soap into the fabric before washing as usual.
Another option is to heat the wax with a hairdryer and then brush it away with a soft brush. Make sure garment is not too close to the heat source and keep the dryer in constant motion to avoid damaging the fabric.
If all else fails, it’s best to take your formalwear to a professional cleaner. They have the necessary expertise and equipment to restore your garment to its original condition.
