Cotton gingham is a lightweight, medium-to-heavyweight cotton fabric with a distinctive pattern of alternating colored and white blocks or stripes.
This fabric is often used to make dresses, shirts, skirts, curtains, and other crafts projects. And while cotton gingham is relatively easy to care for, it can be vulnerable to crayon stains.
Steps For Removing Crayon Stains From Cotton Gingham
- Using a butter knife, remove as much of excess crayon as possible.
- Run cold water over the area from back side of the fabric to force the stain out. Don’t rub, as this could drive stain deeper into the fabric.
- Soak the stained area in a mixture of warm water and dish soap for 30 minutes.
- Using a soft brush, gently scrub the area, being careful not to over-agitate the fabric.
- Rinse the stain with cold water.
- Apply laundry detergent directly to the stain and let sit for 10 minutes.
- Launder in the hottest water safe for the fabric.
- If the stain remains, repeat steps 6-7.
Remember that these steps are only effective on fresh or relatively light stains. For older or difficult stains, you may want to consider taking the garment to a professional cleaner.
Tips for Preventing Crayon Stains on Cotton Gingham
- Whenever possible, stick to washable crayons or those made for “fabric” use.
- Avoid ironing garments with crayon on them.
- Tape down the area around where your children are coloring with crayons to contain any errant marks.
- Spot-test any cleaner you use with an inconspicuous area of the fabric first.
- Be sure to dry garments completely before storing them away to prevent mildew.
Using these simple tips and tricks, you can keep your cotton gingham looking clean and new.
