When crayon stains end up on a collared shirt, it’s important to act quickly. Waiting will only make the stain set in and become harder to remove. To start, pre-treat the stain with a generous application of a stain remover.
Allow the product to sit on stain for about five minutes, then put the shirt in the washing machine. Set the washer to the warmest temperature safe for the fabric, and add a heavy duty detergent. If the wash load is small, add a quarter cup of white vinegar as well.
Once the washing cycle is complete, inspect the shirt for any remaining stains. If the stain isn’t completely gone, you can try spot treating the area with a cleaner specifically designed to remove crayon stains. Then, put the shirt through wash cycle again.
If the stain still doesn’t budge, it’s safe to attempt bleach on colored fabrics. Before using bleach, however, test it in a hidden area of the fabric to make sure it won’t damage the item. To use bleach, mix one tablespoon of bleach with two cups of water. Soak stain for three to five minutes, then launder the shirt immediately.
It’s important to always follow care label on the shirt before attempting to remove a stain. After the stain is removed, air dry the shirt instead of placing it in a dryer, as the heat from the dryer could set the stain into the fabric permanently.
