The first step in cleaning a crayon stain from a button-down shirt is to determine the fabric type. Crayon will stain differently depending on the fabric. Once you know the fabric, you can follow instructions that suit the fabric type.
If the shirt is made from cotton, you will need to pre-treat the stain with a stain remover spray or laundry detergent before laundering. Apply the stain remover or detergent directly to the stain and work it into the fabric with a sponge or cloth. Let it sit for 15-30 minutes before washing with hot water. Once finished, check to make sure the stain has been removed.
If the shirt is made from polyester or a synthetic fabric, pre-treating the stain with hairspray and letting it sit for 10-15 minutes should do the trick. Rub the stain with a cloth or brush and then launder with cold water. Again, once finished, check to make sure the stain has been removed.
If the shirt is made from wool, you will need to take a little more care. The best way to remove a crayon stain from wool is to first mix some liquid dish soap and baking soda with warm water to create a thick paste. Apply the paste to affected area and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then use a soft brush to scrub the stain out of the shirt. Finish by rinsing the shirt in cool water and hang drying.
Once the stain has been successfully removed, take steps to avoid future stains. Crayons are notoriously difficult to get out of fabric, so it is best to take precautions when storing crayons near clothing. Consider keeping them in a designated container or box, or far away from any vulnerable garments.
Removing crayon stains from your beloved button-down shirts doesn’t have to be a chore. Taking a few simple steps (depending on the fabric) can help clean up that pesky stain and get your shirt looking like new again. Just remember to take care when working with fabrics, and keep crayons away from any clothing items prone to staining.
