Removing Fresh Crayon Stains

If you've noticed the crayon stain on your blouse recently, your first step should be to try and remove as much of the crayon as possible. You can do this by scraping carefully with a butter knife or the edge of a hard plastic card. Scrape off as much of the crayon as possible, then treat the remaining stain as follows.

Step 1: Apply a Stain Remover or Detergent

Mix a laundry detergent with warm water and apply it to the stain. Let it soak for at least 15 minutes before washing. Alternatively, you can use a commercial stain remover, such as Spray 'n Wash, that is specifically designed to treat stains.

Step 2: Pre-Treat the Stain With a Stain Remover

Using a separate cloth, apply a generous amount of a commercial stain remover directly to stain. Allow the stain remover to sit for a few minutes before washing. Be sure to follow the directions on the package.

Step 3: Launder as Usual

Once you've pre-treated the stain, launder the blouse as usual, following the care instructions on the clothing label. Be sure to check the stain before putting it in the dryer; if the stain is still visible, repeat steps one and two before drying.

Removing Dried Crayon Stains

If crayon stain has had time to dry, then you will need to take a bit more care when removing it. Fortunately, there are several effective techniques that you can use.

Step 1: Rubbing Alcohol

Take a clean cloth and dampen it with rubbing alcohol. Blot the stain with the cloth, being careful not to rub it in. Allow the rubbing alcohol to sit for five to ten minutes before washing. If the stain persists, repeat this process before laundering.

Step 2: Hair Dryer and Iron

Start by using a hair dryer to heat up stained area. Then, take a clean cloth and an iron set to lowest setting. Place the cloth over the stained area and press the iron down for several seconds. The heat should help to break down the remaining crayon and make it easier to remove. Repeat this process until the stain is gone, then launder as usual.

Step 3: Commercial Stain Remover

If the above methods fail to remove the stain, try using a commercial stain remover or spot cleaner. Follow directions on the package for best results.

Preventing Future Crayon Stains

Now that you know how to remove crayon stains from your blouse, here are a few tips to help you prevent them in the future:

  • Always check your pockets before washing.
  • Keep all crayons out of reach of young children.
  • Wash children's clothes separately from the rest of family's clothes.
