Step One: Blot the Stain

The best way to start cleaning crayon off of alpaca fur is to first blot the stain with a clean cloth or rag. Hold the cloth over the stained area and press down lightly. This will help remove some of the pigment and transfer it onto the cloth, rather than allow it to sink deeply into the fur.

Step Two: Apply Detergent

Once you have blotted the stain as much as possible, it's time to apply a detergent. Look for a gentle detergent that won't irritate the alpaca's skin. Apply the detergent to stain and let it sit for several minutes. This will help break down the crayon particles.

Step Three: Rinse Fur

Rinse away the detergent by running lukewarm water over fur. Use your hand or a soft brush to help move the detergent into the fur and rinse it away. Be gentle so that you don't cause the fur to tangle or matt.

Step Four: Dry and Brush Fur

Once the fur has been rinsed, use a clean towel to dry it. Gently pat fur and then use your hand or a brush to fluff it up. This will help restore its original appearance.

Tips and Warnings

  • If the crayon stain is still visible, repeat steps 1–4 until it's removed.
  • Avoid using hot water or strong detergents on alpaca fur. These can damage the delicate fibers.
