What You'll Need

  • Cold water
  • Mild soap or detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Soft cloth and/or sponge
  • Clean, dry towel

Step 1: Pretreat the Stain with Soap and Water

Pour a small amount of cold water onto the stain. Add a drop of mild soap or detergent to the water, and use a soft cloth or sponge to pretreat the area. Be gentle when rubbing the stain to avoid damaging fabric.

Step 2: Rinse the Pretreatment

After pretreating stain, rinse area with cold water. Again, use a soft cloth or sponge and go carefully to make sure the fabric isn't stretched or torn.

Step 3: Apply White Vinegar

Mix one part white vinegar with two parts cold water in a bowl or sink. Soak a clean cloth in the mixture and apply it to the stain. Let fabric soak for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with cold water.

Step 4: Repeat Steps 1 and 2

Since vinegar can be slightly abrasive, it's best to repeat the first two steps after using it. Pretreat the stain with soap and warm water, then rinse. This will help keep the fabric from pilling or fading.

Step 5: Let Trench Coat Air Dry

Once you have pretreated and cleaned stain, lay the trench coat flat on a dry towel. Allow it to air dry completely before wearing.
