Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Act fast. The longer stain is left to set, the harder it may be to get rid of it. If you notice the stain right away, it will be much easier to remove.
  2. If possible, hold the tie under cold running water. Make sure to use cold water, as hot water could potentially set stain.
  3. Using a paper towel or soft cloth, blot at stain until it is no longer visible.
  4. Pour a small amount of light dish soap onto a damp cloth. Gently rub the soapy rag onto the stain, making sure not to scrub too hard.
  5. Using a clean damp cloth, rinse the area where the stain was. You may need to repeat this process until the soap suds are no longer visible.
  6. Lay the tie on a flat surface. Using a dry cloth, blot the area to absorb any excess moisture.
  7. Hang the tie up to air dry. Do not put in the dryer, as this could cause the stain to set and become permanent.

Prevention

To avoid coffee and tea stains in future, it is important to remember to take off your tie prior to drinking. This will prevent the liquids from getting on to the fabric of the tie. Also, be sure to always blot up any spills as soon as possible, as some spills may be less noticeable if you don’t act quickly.
